Mike Fleming-Missionary to the Dominican Republic
in June 2010 I will be celebrating 2 years living in Padre Las Casas, and working with Prince of Peace Assemblies of God. My work here has included street ministry, hosting missions teams, and teaching English courses to the children of Prince of Peace’s educational center. For October 2010 Freedom Valley Worship Center of Gettysburg, PA is planning a full scale evangelistic crusade here in Padre Las Casas. We will need up to 100 vounteers from the U.S. to come down and work as crusade staff. No special skills are required, just a willing heart and a hunger to see the lost come to Christ. If this has sparked your interest we need people to work in set up and tear down, as well as street evangelism and invitations in the surrounding towns prior to the crusade.
I graduated from Eastern University in 2008 with a Bachelors degree in Social Work and a minor in Spanish. After having visited several other nations of Latin America, I came down to the Dominican Republic during my senior year of college. I felt something very different about this particular place from the moment I had arrived. God began to tug on my heart as I breathed in the warm Carribean air for the first time. Then, I met the people and fell in love with this country more than with any other place I had ever visited. God gave me a clear confirmation to move down here and work as a missionary with Freedom Valley Worship Center. Since I moved down here, I have been married to my wife, Evelina (Tarsis), and we have been blessed with our 7 month old daughter, Carolan.
Purpose & Vision
Purpose:
Going places others aren’t willing to go and loving those who others aren’t willing to love, in Jesus’ name.
Vision:
For the past two years I have become acquainted with this nation’s culture, and have been trying to become a part of it as well as possible as an outsider. I have been exposed to many of the daily challenges among the poor and unemployed of this nation’s rural southwestern region. two of the main areas that God has put on my heart for Padre Las Casas have been the problems of alcoholism and prostitution. In the next year we plan to establish a ministry for rehabilitation here in Padre Las Casas.
This section of the island has been generally neglected by Christian missionaries, and over the years has been visited by a myriad of different Christian sects. The Dominican Republic is an ideal spot for a first time missions experience, and here there are many opportunities for ministry toward people who are hungry for the transforming power of the Gospel.
Our long term vision in Padre Las Casas is to establish a missions base with the focus of training up and coming missionaries and evangelists, and in the process strengthen the local churches.
